Andy Hoffman represented all the ideals of college athletics at Kean from 1979 through 1982. The only four-year letter winner on the 1981 football team as an All-Eastern College Athletic Conference selection at defensive back, he set the school record with a 76-yard return of a blocked punt for a touchdown. Hoffman was also a two-time honorable mention All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference choice.

A three-year starter for the lacrosse squad, Hoffman was an All-Knickerbocker Conference midfielder in 1980 and 1981. He was the recipient of the Coaches Award in 1980 after leading his team to a 10-2 mark and the Conference Championship.

Hoffman captained the lacrosse team in 1982, the same year he shared the D'Angola Award, presented annually to the outstanding male and female student-athlete at Kean.

Today, the Andrew Hoffman Memorial Spirit Award is named for this inspiring student-athlete whose short life tragically ended in Boston at the age of 25 as he attempted to intercede in a fight.

Hoffman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in management science from Kean in 1982.
