One of the most decorated players in the history of Kean University field hockey, Carey Kessler Trayner became only the second Cougar in field-hockey history to be named a four-time New Jersey Athletic Conference all-star and was the first player in school history to be named an NCAA South-Atlantic Regional all-star twice during her career.

Competing then as Carey Kessler, she garnered her first of many awards in 1992 when she was tabbed NJAC Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-NJAC first team. In 1993, she made her second appearance on the NJAC first team and also scored the first of her four career goals, including the game winner over Wesley College. Kessler started all 65 of her career games and helped lead the Cougars set a then-school record for wins in back-to-back seasons when they finished 9-6-1 in 1994 and 12-7 in 1995.

A midfielder and back throughout her career, Kessler also earned NJAC Honorable Mention Academic All-Conference recognition and was the starting point guard on the women's basketball team in 1993-94.

Kessler earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in mathematical teaching in 1997.
