Cheryl Bullock Hughes starred on both the field hockey and softball teams from 1988 to 1992. In field hockey, she was the first Kean player to be named first team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for four straight years. She led the Cougars to back-to-back winning seasons in 1988 and 1989. The 1988 squad qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament, only the second time in school history that a team earned a postseason berth. In her senior year, she led the squad with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points, and was named team MVP. Those seven assists are the third most in a single season for a Kean player.

On the softball field, Bullock Hughes was twice named to the NJAC All-Conference team in 1990 and 1991. She was also named to the All-Region first team as an outfielder three straight years from 1990 through 1992. During her four years, the team went 91-64 and advanced to one NCAA Regional Tournament and two ECAC Championship games. Bullock Hughes finished her career fifth on the Cougars all-time list in batting average at .352, fifth in stolen bases with 26 and fifth in career hits with 145. She also finished second in career triples with eight and third in career doubles with 33. In her senior year, she earned the D'Angola Award, presented annually to Kean's outstanding female student-athlete.

Bullock Hughes earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in health and physical education from Kean in 1993.
