Even after an All-State career as a goalkeeper for his high school lacrosse team, James Montalbano was able to further distinguish himself on the field for Kean.

A four-year starter from 1972 through 1975, Montalbano helped lead the Squires (now Cougars) to the first two Knickerbocker Conference championships and first postseason berth in the history of the program. He spurred the team to a 24-12 mark over his last three years.

Montalbano was named to the first team All-Knickerbocker Conference team as a senior in 1975, a season in which he helped lead Kean to their second consecutive Knickerbocker crown. He allowed just 108 goals as the squad battled to a 7-5 record.
As a junior, Montalbano was a first-team All-Knickerbocker pick after surrendering only 87 goals in 13 games. The Squires posted a team-record nine wins against just four losses, earning the Knickerbocker Conference title and a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.

Montalbano was an honorable mention All-Knickerbocker choice in 1973 after leading the squad to an 8-3 mark.

Montalbano earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial education from Kean in 1975.
