Kean University

Not only was John "Jack" Mott a star for the Newark State College (now Kean University) baseball team from 1958 through 1960, he was also a pivotal part of the 1958-1959 Newark State basketball squad, one of the most talented clubs in the history of the program.

Mott led the team in scoring in 1957-1958 with 340 points, an average of 16 per game and was second the following season, netting 396 points (16.5 ppg) en route to All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference (NJSCAC) honors.

The 1958-1959 season saw Newark State post a 14-7 mark and finish in a first-place tie with Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) for the NJSCAC regular season title. Mott notched 15 points in a losing effort versus the Profs in a subsequent playoff game. Five members of that Newark State club are in the Hall of Fame as well, including Archie Chiles, Eugene Campbell, Arthur Salley and John Joseph Kaufman.

Mott excelled on the baseball diamond from 1958 through 1960 as a pitcher and infielder. Also an outstanding bowler, Mott helped lead the Newark State team to the New Jersey State College Bowling Tournament Championship in 1960.

Following his graduation, Mott coached both baseball and softball. It was as a baseball coach at Parsippany High School that he mentored future major leaguers Richie Zisk and Paul Mirabella.

Mott earned a Bachelor of Science degree in junior high education in 1960.
