During the 1930s, Newark Normal School (now Kean University) offered but one intercollegiate sport in which women might compete - archery - and the existence of even that was due in great part to its star, Careta Dillenger.

Dillenger, under the guidance of Joseph D'Angola, was one of the organizers of the Sagittorii Society, as the campus archery club was known. She rapidly established herself as the club's star, though the team seemed to consistently finish second behind Montclair Normal School (now Montclair State University).

Dillenger was able to exact some measure of revenge shortly after her graduation, defeating Ann Weber, the 1940 Women's National Archery Champion, who starred for Montclair Normal, in the eastern tournament.

She followed her impressive victory by capturing the 1941 Women's National Archery Championship in Portland, Ore.

Dillenger earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1939.
