A member of the original Newark State College (now Kean University) football team in 1970, Steve Zamek led his squad in tackles in all four years as a starting linebacker, including a team-record 121 in 1973.

Yet football may not have even been Zamek's best sport, as he is widely considered to be one of the best midfielders to pick up a lacrosse stick for the school. A star from 1971 through 1974, Zamek exhibited a mastery at controlling faceoffs, leading the club all four years and graduating as the program's all-time leader in that category. In one contest versus Montclair State College (now University), Zamek won a remarkable 23 of 24 faceoffs.

An All-Knickerbocker Conference choice in 1973-1974, Zamek was the captain of the 1974 squad that posted a school-best 9-4 mark, won their first Knickerbocker Conference Championship, and earned the program's first postseason bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.

Zamek received the 1974 D'Angola Award, presented annually to Kean's outstanding male and female student-athlete.

Zamek earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in health and physical education from Kean in 1974.
