The years of 1965 through 1968 were lean times for the Newark State College (now Kean University) men's soccer program. Despite it all, Saulius "Sam" Sabaliauskas shone brightly for the Squires (now Cougars).

Sabaliauskas was an All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference selection all four of his years in the program, earning first-team honors as a junior and senior and compiling a team-record 35 goals for his career.

Sabaliauskas ended his time in uniform as the program's single season and career scoring leader. As the team captain in 1968, he netted a club record 21 goals, including five in the season opener, a single game mark, against Bloomfield College. He was named the team's Most Valuable Player after leading the program to its initial winning campaign.

Also a standout tennis player, Sabaliauskas was the recipient of the Coaches Award following his senior season.

Sabaliauskas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial education in 1969.
