Lowell and Toby Harwood's generosity has been the driving force behind numerous campus-improvement projects at Kean such as the majestic fountain that greets visitors to the Kean campus who enter off Green Lane. Their name also adorns a fountain in the park-like setting adjacent to the University's Downs Hall. Most recently, however, the Harwoods bestowed their generosity upon the Department of Athletics by naming the fantastic new Harwood Arena.
While significant, the arena is just the latest of the Harwood's charitable ventures with Kean. In early 2003, Lowell Harwood, the chief executive officer and principal shareholder of Square Industries Inc., an $80 million public company located in Jersey City, N.J., and his wife, Toby, donated the money to pay for an elaborate stained-glass window mural in the Kean Hall Conference Center. The colorful window depicts the evolution of education and knowledge from the middle ages through modern technology and is considered to be the centerpiece of the renovated Kean Hall.
Mr. Harwood was appointed to the Kean University Board of Trustees in May 1995. In addition, he also serves on the Foundation Board, and is a former board chair, of Christ Hospital in Jersey City and serves on the Board of Directors of Central Parking, a New York Stock Exchange Company, as well. A resident of Short Hills, N.J., he also is past president of the Manhattan Parking Association and is on the Board of Directors of the National Parking Association. Mr. Harwood was a member of the Kean University Board of Trustees from 1995 until he was named TrusteeEmeritus in December 2004.
