A four-year starter on the Newark State (now Kean) basketball team, Eugene Campbell became just the sixth player in school history to record 1,000 points, finishing a prolific career with 1,089.  He reached the magic 1,000-point plateau on February 6, 1960, against the Aggies of the National Bible Institute.

Campbell was a tenacious rebounder as well, pacing the Squires in that category all four years while leading them in scoring in his freshman and senior years. He captained the 1959-1960 squad as a senior.

As a junior in 1958-1959, Campbell scored 18 points in a playoff loss to Glassboro State College (Now Rowan University). That Newark State team went 14-7 and tied for the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference regular season championship. Five other members of that squad, Jack Mott, John Joseph Kaufman, Archie Chiles and Arthur Salley, are in the Hall of Fame.
Campbell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education in 1960.
