A three-year star at Newark State College (now Kean University), John J. McVey was a vital member of the 1965-1966 team that posted a 14-11 mark, earning the program its first New Jersey State College Athletic Conference Championship.
McVey finished second on that squad in scoring, with 399 points, and in rebounding, grabbing 316 boards. Newark State notched a conference record of 9-2 before defeating Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) in the playoffs.
Serving as team captain during his senior campaign, McVey climbed atop the 1,000-point plateau, becoming the sixth player in school history to achieve the mark. He was a second team All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference and All-State College Division pick, as well as an NAIA District 31 All-American honorable mention selection in 1965-1966. The 6'6" center was also second on the 1963-1964 team in scoring, netting 235 points.
McVey kept his athletic skills sharp in the spring by competing on the golf team.
McVey earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology/teacher education in 1966.
