A baseball star at Newark State College (now Kean University), Allan M. Cohn received much more acclaim for his basketball prowess as a star for the Black Knights (now Cougars) from 1947-1951, graduating as the school's all-time scoring leader with 958 points.
After finishing second on the team in scoring as a sophomore, Cohn paced the squad as a junior and senior. He broke the school's single-season scoring record as a junior with 364 points in 1949-1950 and established a new single game scoring mark when he dumped in 38 points versus the National Bible Institute in 1948-1949. Cohn also led the Black Knights to a stellar 14-4 record in 1950-1951.
Cohn was also a charter member of the school's first baseball team in 1949, and played second base, shortstop and right field during his last three years of college, batting .315 as a junior. He went 2-for-3 and scored two runs in the Black Knights' first game, a 13-8 win over Jersey City Teachers College (now New Jersey City University).
Cohn returned to his alma mater in 1956, spending one season as head coach of the basketball team.
Cohn earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1951.
