Hall of Fame
A four-year star on the baseball diamond for Newark State College (now Kean University), Louis James Ferrante left the program with a number of single season and career records after helping it to its first winning season in over a decade in 1971.
A catcher and outfielder, Ferrante collected club-record 78 hits during his prolific career, as well as a record 40 career walks. His 10 doubles and eight home runs were the second-highest totals in the program's history, and he batted over .300 in three of his four seasons.
Ferrante also recorded the single-season mark for walks, with 17 in 1970. The four home runs he clubbed that year were good for second best in one campaign.
Ferrante earned team Most Valuable Player honors as a sophomore and won the Best Team Player Award as a junior. He received an honorable mention All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference nod as a junior.
As captain as a junior and senior, Ferrante was selected to appear in the 1970 edition of Outstanding College Athletes in America.
Ferrante earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education in 1971.
